What Is an AI Image Editor?

An AI image editor is a tool that changes a photo based on a written instruction instead of manual selections, layers or masks. You upload an image, describe the edit in plain language — remove an object, change the outfit, swap the background — and the model repaints only what you asked for while keeping the rest of the photo intact.

That makes it different from both classic editors like Photoshop, where you do the work by hand, and from a text-to-image generator, which creates a new picture from scratch. An AI image editor starts from your photo and preserves its composition, lighting and people — it edits, it doesn't reinvent. If you want brand-new images instead, use our text-to-image tool.

How to Edit a Photo with AI in 3 Steps

1

Upload your photo

Drop in any JPG, PNG or WebP straight from your phone or camera. Portraits, products, interiors and landscapes all work.

2

Describe the change

Type the edit in plain language or start from a preset — the more specific the instruction, the cleaner the result. One sentence is usually enough.

3

Generate and download

The model repaints only what you asked for. Compare up to four variations, then download your edited image at up to 4K resolution.

What You Can Edit with a Prompt

Six everyday edits, each one sentence away. The prompt under each card is a real starter — pick the matching preset in the editor above and adapt the bracketed part.

Remove objects

Erase photobombers, wires, trash bins or any distraction. The model reconstructs the background behind the removed object so the fill looks like it was always there — no clone stamp, no patch tool.

> Remove the [object] from the photo, seamlessly filling the area with a natural continuation of the background

Change outfits

Swap a t-shirt for a suit, a dress for streetwear, or recolor clothing entirely while keeping the pose, face and lighting untouched. Popular for professional profile photos and e-commerce fit variations.

> Change the outfit to [a tailored navy suit], keeping the pose, face and lighting exactly the same

Swap backgrounds

Move the subject from a cluttered bedroom to a studio wall, a beach or a city street. Edge detail like hair stays clean, and the lighting on the subject adapts to the new scene.

> Replace the background with [a sunlit beach at golden hour], keeping the subject perfectly intact with natural edge lighting

Transfer styles

Repaint a photo as watercolor, oil painting, anime or vintage film while the composition stays recognizable. Great for avatars, posters and gifts.

> Repaint this photo as [a soft watercolor illustration], keeping the composition and subject recognizable

Retouch portraits

Even out skin tone, brighten dull lighting, sharpen eyes and clean up small blemishes with one instruction — natural results, not the plastic filter look.

> Retouch this portrait: even out skin tone, brighten the lighting and sharpen the eyes — keep it natural, no plastic look

Add elements

Furnish an empty room, add props to a product scene or put a hat on the dog. New elements are matched to the photo's perspective and lighting automatically.

> Add [two large potted plants and a framed poster] to the scene, matching the existing lighting and perspective

How to Write Better Edit Prompts

Editing prompts are instructions, not descriptions. Five habits that noticeably improve results:

1

Name the target precisely

"Remove the red car on the left" beats "clean up the photo". The model edits what you name — ambiguity is the number one cause of wrong edits.

2

Say what must not change

Add "keep the face, pose and lighting unchanged" to any edit near a person. Explicit constraints are how you protect identity.

3

One edit per generation

Chain big changes across multiple generations instead of stacking five instructions into one sentence. Each pass stays precise, and you keep every intermediate version.

4

Describe the fill, not just the removal

For removals, mention what should appear instead: "replace with the brick wall behind". It guides the reconstruction.

5

Use the presets as scaffolding

The six preset chips insert proven sentence structures. Replace the bracketed part with your specifics instead of writing from a blank line.
