What Is an Image to Layers Converter?

An image to layers converter is an AI tool that takes one flat picture and returns its parts as separate files: a clean background and one transparent PNG for each person, object, logo or line of text. You can then move, resize, recolor or replace any part without redrawing the rest.

A JPG or PNG is a single sheet of pixels. Once a poster or product shot is flattened, you cannot nudge the headline or swap the product without masking it by hand. Image to layers AI does that masking for you, one element at a time.

What you get back

  1. BG

    A clean background

The first file is the scene with every separated element removed. The AI paints in the gaps, so there are no holes where the objects used to be.

  2. L1

    One PNG per element

Each element arrives as its own transparent PNG, cropped to its edges. Parts hidden behind other objects are filled in, so a bench behind a person comes back whole.

  3. L2

One ZIP or a layered PSD

Download layers one by one, grab them all in one ZIP, or switch on PSD for a single Photoshop file with every layer in place.

How it differs from background removal

Background removal

Keeps one subject and throws the background away. Useful for a single cutout, but everything else in the picture is lost.

Image to layers

Keeps everything. Every element you name becomes its own layer, and the background stays too, repaired where the elements were.

How to Split an Image into Layers in 3 Steps

The whole image to layers workflow runs in your browser. No plugin, no design software, no masking.

01

Upload your image

Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB into the tool at the top of this page. Posters, product shots, thumbnails and photos all work.

02

Name what to separate

Type the elements you want as layers, such as "the woman, the headline, the logo". Leave the box empty and the AI picks the main elements itself.

03

Download your layers

In about a minute, image to layers returns the clean background plus one PNG per element. Download any single layer, all of them as one ZIP, or a layered PSD.

What the AI Can Separate

Image to layers works on photos and on flat graphics alike. These four groups cover almost every picture you will upload.

People and pets

Faces, hair, clothing and the whole pose come out as one layer. In our park example, the man, the dog and the bench he sat on all came back as separate, complete layers.

Products and objects

Bottles, boxes, furniture, food and props. Small items are redrawn at a higher resolution: a sticker about 245 pixels wide in the source came back 753 pixels wide.

Text and logos

Headlines, captions, badges and logos separate cleanly, with the lettering intact. The LIVE badge on our poster was about 190 pixels wide and came back at 752.

Backgrounds and scenery

The background is always a layer of its own. Name a sky, a sun or a tree to split the scenery further, and the plate underneath is filled in.

Where it struggles

We ran these image to layers examples to find the limits too. Three things to know before you upload.

Fine texture is redrawn

Each layer is redrawn rather than copied pixel for pixel. Text, logos and labels stay exact, but bark, grass and fabric can differ slightly from the original.

Hidden parts are a guess

When an element is partly covered, the AI completes it. The sun on our poster sat behind a mountain range, and it came back as a disc with a flat bottom.

Auto mode splits its own way

With no prompt, the AI decides what counts as one element. It split our tree into a trunk and a canopy. If you need a different split, name the parts.

Write a Better Separation Prompt

The prompt box in the image to layers tool is optional, but a short list of elements gets you exactly the layers you want.

01

Name each element

List the parts as plain nouns separated by commas: "the woman, the guitar, the headline". Each item becomes one layer.

02

Describe what you see

Point at elements by what is visible, like "the red arrow" or "the NEW sticker". Colors and printed words help the AI find the right part.

03

Leave it empty to explore

Not sure what to split? Run it without a prompt. The AI picks the main elements, which is a quick way to see what the image holds.

Three prompts to copy

These follow the prompts behind our image to layers examples. Swap the nouns for the parts of your own image.

Event poster

the headline text, the person with the guitar, the logo badge, the sun

Product shot

the product bottle, the plant sprigs, the sale sticker, the stone pedestal

Video thumbnail

the person, the big title text, the arrow

Use Your Layers in Photoshop, Figma and Canva

Every image to layers result is a set of standard PNG files, so any design tool can open it. With PSD on, Photoshop users can skip the placing: open one file and every layer is already in position.

Photoshop

Steps

  1. 1Open the background PNG as your canvas.
  2. 2Choose File, then Place Embedded, and pick a layer PNG.
  3. 3Scale it down, drag it into position and press Enter.
  4. 4Repeat for each layer, using the file numbers as your stacking order.

Tip

Switched on PSD? Skip these steps: open the PSD and every layer is already named and in place.

Figma

Steps

  1. 1Drag the background PNG onto the canvas and wrap it in a frame.
  2. 2Drag in the layer PNGs. Each one lands as its own image layer.
  3. 3Resize and position each element over the background.
  4. 4Set the order in the layers panel, from back to front.

Tip

Turn an element into a component and reuse it across every size of an ad set.

Canva

Steps

  1. 1Upload the background and the layer PNGs in the Uploads tab.
  2. 2Add the background and stretch it to fill the page.
  3. 3Click each layer to add it, then drag and resize it into place.
  4. 4Use Position, then Forward or Backward, to fix the order.

Tip

Because the layers are separate, you can swap the headline or the product and leave the rest of the design untouched.

Export a Layered PSD with Every Layer in Place

Switch on PSD before you run the image to layers tool and you also get one Photoshop file: the clean background at the bottom and every element on its own named layer, exactly where it sat in your picture.

5 + BG
A real PSD export of our product photo: five named layers on the background, each one back in place.

Every layer in place

Each element keeps its original position and size, so the PSD opens looking exactly like your picture. No dragging layers back into line.

Named layers

Layers are named after what they hold, such as "serum bottle" or "NEW sticker", so the one you need is easy to find in a long stack.

Background included

The clean background sits at the bottom of the stack, with the gaps behind each element already filled in.

PSD runs cost 65 credits instead of 30 and take about two minutes. Turn on the PSD switch in the tool above to use it.

Image to Layers Use Cases

Anywhere a flat image needs to become editable again, image to layers saves you the masking.

01

Ad variations

Split a winning ad once, then swap the headline, the product or the background to test new versions without a reshoot.

Try this

Keep the background layer fixed and change only the text layer between variants.

02

Poster and thumbnail edits

Fix a typo, move a logo or translate a headline on a design you only have as a JPG.

Try this

Name the text you want to change in the prompt, so it comes back as its own layer.

03

Ecommerce images

Pull the product off a lifestyle shot and reuse it on a white background, a banner or a new scene.

Try this

Take the product layer into the AI Image Editor and describe the scene you want around it.

04

Animation prep

Separated layers are the starting point for parallax and motion: move the foreground and the background at different speeds.

Try this

Turn the finished design into a short clip with Image to Video.

AI Layer Separation vs Manual Masking

Masking by hand with the Pen tool or layer masks is precise but slow. Here is how the two compare on a typical poster with four elements.

Compared onManual maskingImage to layers AI
Time30 to 90 minutes, depending on the edgesAbout a minute
EdgesAs clean as your path and featheringClean on dark and light, no halo
Hidden areasLost: you only have what was visibleCovered parts are filled in
Holes in the backgroundContent-aware fill and cloning by handPainted in automatically
CostA software subscription plus your time30 credits per image

When manual masking is still the better choice

If you need the exact original pixels, for example a product photo that must match the packaging, mask by hand. Image to layers redraws each layer, which is ideal for edits and redesigns but not for pixel-perfect reproduction.

Formats, Limits and Pricing

What the image to layers tool accepts, what it returns and what it costs.

Input

JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB, one image per run. Larger and sharper sources give cleaner layers.

Output

A background PNG in the same aspect ratio as your upload, plus one transparent PNG per element. Download them one by one, as a single ZIP, or as one layered PSD.

Price

30credits per image

Image to layers costs 30 credits per image, however many layers come back, or 65 with the PSD export. A run takes about a minute (two with PSD), and if it fails the credits return to your balance automatically.
